Bridging The Gap
Our guest speaker this week was Les Hayward from Bridging the Gap. Bridging the Gap (BTG) is a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity that has been operating for over 42 years in WA.

They deliver employment, career development and training services through partnerships with local community-based organisations across the Perth region to the Peel region and out to Armadale.

Their mission is ‘to bridge the gap and build communities by empowering disadvantaged and disenfranchised individuals to build their self-sufficiency through social inclusion, practical training and enhanced employment opportunities’.

Les gave a very thorough presentation, covering many of the aspects of the work of Bridging the Gap. Some of the slides from the presentation follow. Further information can be found on their website

He also advised that we achieved a good profit on the BMX parking which will be applied to the RIDE programme through our Charity account. Mark reminded us that the Combined Service Clubs dinner is booked for 23rd August and is a fun and fellowship evening. We are also looking at cooking the lunch at TPDVWA for Vietnam Veterans Day on 18th August. More details will follow on this.

Changeover details are now confirmed and Mark announced that Reece Whitby (MLA for Baldivis) is attending.

YOUTH/VOCATIONAL

Jacki and Andrew reminded everyone to share the details of RIDE so that we get a larger reach for the programme. The Vocational and Youth committees will meet on 18th May to discuss the budget and projects for the coming Rotary year.

Alan thanked our friends from TPDVWA for attending and being involved in the Golf Day. He noted that we are all looking forward to the next one under the guidance of the incoming Foundation Chair, Gareth. He also gave FAIR WARNING that a Foundation Quiz will be on the agenda at the next club meeting. (We may all need to brush up on our knowledge for this one!)

Youth Service Month

Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Our programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service. These projects are many and varied and include Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Rotary Youth Program on Enrichment.

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE (Currently on hold due to COVID-19)

Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace one young person at a time.

Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students ages 15-19 are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.

What are the benefits?

Exchange students unlock their true potential to:

  • Develop lifelong leadership skills
  • Learn a new language and culture
  • Build lasting friendships with young people from around the world
  • Become a global citizen

How long do exchanges last?

Long-term exchanges last a full academic year, and students attend local schools and live with multiple host families.

Short-term exchanges last from several days to three months and are often structured as camps, tours, or homestays that take place when school is not in session.

What are the costs?

Room and board are provided, as well as any school fees. Each program varies, but students are usually responsible for:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Travel insurance
  • Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
  • Spending money and any additional travel or tours

How can I apply?

Candidates are ages 15-19 and are leaders in their schools and communities. Contact your local Rotary club to see what exchange opportunities are available and what the application process involves.

“During my year in Brazil, I was a representative of Australia, of my family, and of Rotary. Doing something bigger than yourself, it humbles you.”

Joel Jackson, former Youth Exchange student from Australia

“Before, I would never be able to make a conversation with a person I didn’t know. Now, I can proudly say it isn’t like that anymore. I can go up to people. I have become more open, more mature.”

Varda Shah, former Youth Exchange student from India

“To meet up with my classmates and host families after 50 years has been simply amazing. Through Rotary Youth Exchange I had such a precious chance and a fabulous experience. Thank you.”

Yoko Sekimoto, the first Youth Exchange student from Japan
