COMBINED SERVICE CLUBS DINNER

Wow! What a wonderful dinner meeting we had sharing and hearing from other local community service organisations. There is no doubt that our volunteer groups are dedicated people working to better the lives of all people!

We were privileged to hear some of the major projects of these groups and the impact they are making as the also 'Serve to Change Lives'! Following is a brief overview of some of these projects:
  • Kathy from CWA (Country Women's Association) Baldivis spoke about their Starter Kits which help women fleeing domestic and family violence to set up their home, sometimes for the first time. These kits consist of items for the kitchen and bathroom as well as various other essentials. She told us the story of an 80 year old lady who finally left a violent domestic relationship after many years of abuse. This lady was moved to tears by receiving a brand new tea towel. As Kathy said -'Little things can make a big difference'.
  • Hazel, President of Rockingham Lions, spoke about their focus on recycling. They collect stamps, old spectacles, newspapers and ring pulls to name a few. They are also about to 'christen' a new barbecue trailer at Kleenheat Gas where they hold a monthly sausage sizzle. Hazel also spoke about their 'Happy Feet' Convention which is being held in Rockingham in October this year. A flyer for this event is included in this bulletin.
  • Lions Port Kennedy have an active focus on youth in the area. They also have taken on the 'handyman' role for residents in Bethanie Village, taking care of the tasks the residents can't manage independently. From 'Containers for Cash' they have raised $4000 so far this year which is being used to support community projects.
  • Soroptimists Rockingham are celebrating their 40th birthday this year. They are holding a 'Fashion Show High Tea' at the Navy Club on 18th September. (Flyer included in this bulletin.) Their main project is 'Baby Bundles' - providing essentials to new Mothers who may not have the resources to buy these for themselves.
  • Donnah Francome, President of the Rotary Club of Rockingham, spoke about their fundraising activities through the Rockingham Markets. Although the markets have been affected by COVID and weather issues they continue to use the profits to support the community. They are in the early stages of a major project with more information to come on this. They are also supporting the 'Mind The Walk' event which is being run in October this year.
  • The Rotary Club of Palm Beach holds a major annual event - The Beach Cup - in November. It's main purpose is to raise funds for the 'End Polio' campaign. In March they are holding a beachside run and expect between 400 and 600 runners. This is targeted at youth projects. They are also actively supporting the provision of nesting boxes to both penguins and black cockatoos.
  • Leanne Knowler represented the EWA club and spoke about the focus they have on the environment with tree planting taking place all over the state. They also hold an annual swimathon at Bruce Rock with the focus on literacy through the 'Love 4 Reading' programme. They have a fundraising initiative currently happening through Wise Wines and if you like a decent wine click on this link to order and get more information.
  • Finally our very own President Trevor gave a brief overview of some of our signature projects - International Women's Day lunch and RIDE (Rotary Introductory Driver Education). He also mentioned the 'Rotary Day at the Zoo' which is happening on 24th October.

GUEST SPEAKER - JACK COLLIER

Jack was born in the town of Sotik in Kenya, East Africa. His parents came from Austria and purchased 4000 acres from the British Government in an area known for tea plantations. As a child Jack attended boarding school from the age of 5, which taught him to be independent.

Polio

Jack contracted polio whilst at school during a polio epidemic. He was 13 years old and was treated in hospital, spending 9 months in an iron lung. He suffered total paralysis and was unable to walk, talk, breathe or use any of his limbs. As part of his recovery he received daily physiotherapy to keep his legs mobile and was taught to breathe again by 'swallowing' air.

Today Jack suffers from Post Polio Syndrome which causes weak stomach muscles, muscle wastage and difficulty walking. He gave us a comprehensive overview of the disease and complications following recovery.

Donations to the Rotary International 'End Polio' campaign can be made here. For every dollar donated to this campaign the 'Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation' will contribute a further two dollars.

Donations to Post Polio Research can be made by contacting the Polio Clinic WA at this email address. polioclinicwa@gmail.com

ROTARY PROJECTS AROUND THE GLOBE

Mexico
In Ciudad Juárez, one woman’s work to protect children from street violence has blossomed into Soles de Anapra, a center serving some 80 young people. Since 2014, the Rotary Club of El Paso, Camino Real, Texas, had been donating goods to Lourdes Contreras for the after-school program she ran out of a small house. In 2015, the club decided to find her a bigger, better space. With $25,000 donated by the 16 clubs in Ciudad Juárez and two partners in New Mexico — the Rotary clubs of Los Alamos and Silver City, frequent contributors and visitors to the center — and $10,000 raised from a 5K run sponsored by the Eaton Corporation, the club purchased a 6,000-square-foot warehouse in 2016 and went to work. In April, the club completed a refurbishment of the building, carried out even as the pandemic temporarily halted the after-school program.

France
The Rotary Club of Nice Riviera Côte d’Azur has tackled an outsize number of projects in France and beyond in recent years. It worked with a sister club, the Rotary Club of Norwich, England, to install a rainwater recovery system in Ho, Ghana, and has done fundraising for cancer research. The Rotarians also donated to a charity that purchased garden planters valued at more than $6,000 for local pediatric medical facilities in Nice. The club also raises funds for cancer research. At local grocery stores, in exchange for a donation of 1 €, club members offer tokens used to unlock shopping carts.

ROTARY AND SHELTERBOX ON THE GROUND IN HAITI

Following a powerful and devastating earthquake in Haiti, Rotary is playing a role in the immediate and long-term response through ShelterBox and the Rotary Disaster Recovery Trust.

ShelterBox, Rotary’s project partners in disaster, is sending a small team to the Dominican Republic after a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, working with Rotary in the region for support. At least 80,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged, and it is expected that number will soar.

Days after the earthquake, Tropical Storm Grace made landfall, bringing with it heavy rains that triggered deadly mudslides and flooding. Families are sleeping out in the open in makeshift tents and under tarpaulins, or sheltering with neighbours, increasing the risk of a coronavirus outbreak. Emergency shelter will be vital in giving families the space to recover and socially distance.

Upon arrival in the Dominican Republic, the ShelterBox team will work with fellow humanitarians, including the Rotary District 7020 Disaster Management Committee to assess damage reports, understand from communities what they need, and work on the challenging logistics of delivering aid to areas where buildings have been reduced to rubble.

This will be the first time a ShelterBox team has deployed since the coronavirus crisis severely restricted international travel in early 2020.

ShelterBox have responded several times to Haiti, including in the aftermath of the catastrophic 2010 earthquake. The charity will be using everything it has learned, and its close partnership with Rotary International, to forge local connections and make sure the right emergency shelter reaches communities when they need it.

Alice Jefferson, ShelterBox Head of Responses, said: “The earthquake hit Haiti early in the morning – and it hit hard. Right now, almost a million people need support. We know that will include shelter. Our teams are working round the clock to understand how to get the right aid to people in Haiti, and Storm Grace only increases the urgency.

“The rubble of a disaster zone is no place to shelter from a tropical storm, let alone try and continue rescuing survivors. We will do everything we can to reach vulnerable communities after they have suffered so much.”

Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2010, which led to hundreds of thousands of lives being lost.

ShelterBox responded to the Les Cayes region – close to the epicentre of Saturday’s earthquake after Hurricane Matthew in 2016. The geography near the quake’s epicentre makes access to vulnerable communities – and the materials they need to recover – especially difficult. Homes are often made from concrete, wood and corrugated iron, leaving them vulnerable to strong earthquakes. Heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Grace has cut off roads and left people stranded without support.
