Guest Speaker - Alexandra Holcbarova

Alex is CEO and Performance Coach at The Mentoring Effect and Ephemera Events. She has a Masters in Economics and is a Certified Coach with The Coaching Institute Australia. Alex shared her story about how she came to research emotional intelligence, including being burgled 4 times on her arrival in Australia and her struggles with infertility.

Using the following slides, Alex talked us through some of the impacts our thoughts and feelings have on the way we process circumstances.

Some of the key points that Alex made are:
  • Everything is in our heads.
  • Change the story - free yourself from the negative (this may take time).
  • Using your preceptors (senses) work on the mental aspects to get back into the better place.
  • NOBODY can make YOU feel bad!
  • Stay who you want to be.

Thank you Alex for your very engaging and challenging presentation! And thank you for masking up as well.

PRESENTATIONS - SCHOOLS PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

With the completion of the photo competition it's time to start the presentations to our wonderful photographers. Unfortunately our friend COVID-19 has delayed several of these but this week we are finally able to get out and deliver prizes and certificates.

The first presentation is to Michelle at Warnbro Community High School. Michelle won in the 'Landscape' section with a gorgeous picture of a sunset.

The next presentation was at Bertram Primary School where Ellyse achieved First Prize in the category of 'Pets - Years 3 - 6) and Atticus was awarded and Honourable Mention in the same category. Congratulations to both students!

VISIT TO SOUTHERN DISTRICTS ROTARY

Foundation Chair Alan Steel and committee member Kay Phipps attended Southern Districts Rotary Club meeting to say thanks for their donation towards our recent golf day and to present them with an appreciation certificate on behalf of our club members. It was an enjoyable evening connecting with other Rotarians.

UPDATES FROM SERVICE CHAIRS

YOUTH
Youth Chair Jacki advised that she had 3 candidates for RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) however due to COVID concerns 2 of the candidates withdrew and the 3rd changed their mind about attending. The next RIDE program event is scheduled for the 21st May.

MIND THE WALK
Chair Davina advised that the walk has been 'mapped out' and everything looks good for the event. She also thanked our visitors from Rockingham and Palm Beach for the work on the committee and the support they have given to the project. The next meeting for this committee is 25th May.

FOUNDATION
Chair Alan was very pleased to announce the results of the Golf Day with a substantial sum being raised. He is arranging for the President of the TPDVWA to attend a meeting for the presentation of a banner cheque representing their share of the proceeds, as the Gunfire Breakfast on ANZAC Day was cancelled due to the lockdown.

This was a wonderful outcome for everyone involved and we are particularly appreciative of Alan's efforts as Chair of this committee.

PRESIDENT MARK
Mark advised that we are working towards cooking a breakfast for the TPDVWA on Vietnam Veterans Day in August. More details on this will follow.

Mark also reminded members who are Coles shoppers to collect the 'Masterchef' cookware even if they don't need it themselves. These items can be given to people in need. Further information about this campaign can be found here.

MEMBER GREG MAGUIRE
On a sad note our member Greg Maguire has decided to move on to other things and is leaving us to take on new ventures. We wish Greg all the best and will miss him at our get togethers!

Youth Service Month

Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Our programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service. These projects are many and varied and include Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Rotary Youth Program on Enrichment.

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE (Currently on hold due to COVID-19)

Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace one young person at a time.

Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students ages 15-19 are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.

What are the benefits?

Exchange students unlock their true potential to:

  • Develop lifelong leadership skills
  • Learn a new language and culture
  • Build lasting friendships with young people from around the world
  • Become a global citizen

How long do exchanges last?

Long-term exchanges last a full academic year, and students attend local schools and live with multiple host families.

Short-term exchanges last from several days to three months and are often structured as camps, tours, or homestays that take place when school is not in session.

What are the costs?

Room and board are provided, as well as any school fees. Each program varies, but students are usually responsible for:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Travel insurance
  • Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
  • Spending money and any additional travel or tours

How can I apply?

Candidates are ages 15-19 and are leaders in their schools and communities. Contact your local Rotary club to see what exchange opportunities are available and what the application process involves.

“During my year in Brazil, I was a representative of Australia, of my family, and of Rotary. Doing something bigger than yourself, it humbles you.”

Joel Jackson, former Youth Exchange student from Australia

“Before, I would never be able to make a conversation with a person I didn’t know. Now, I can proudly say it isn’t like that anymore. I can go up to people. I have become more open, more mature.”

Varda Shah, former Youth Exchange student from India

“To meet up with my classmates and host families after 50 years has been simply amazing. Through Rotary Youth Exchange I had such a precious chance and a fabulous experience. Thank you.”

Yoko Sekimoto, the first Youth Exchange student from Japan
